Revising the Texas index of leading indicators

The Texas Leading Index (TLI), produced monthly by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, combines eight measures that tend to anticipate changes in the Texas business cycle by about three to nine months.. ; The TLI was first published in the Dallas Fed’s Economic Review in July 1988. The index’s approaching 20th anniversary provides an apt occasion to review its real-time performance and look at ways it might be improved to keep up with the changing structure of the Texas economy and the availability of new data sources. ; We find that the TLI performed well in the one recession since 1990 and, used in a model forecasting Texas employment, has done well in real time when compared with other forecasts. Although the current version of the TLI works reasonably well, we suggest changes to the TLI that generally reflect the growing importance of services and globalization and the reduced importance of energy production in Texas business cycles.Economic indicators ; Forecasting ; Index numbers (Economics)

Diffusion-reaction model for alkali-silica reaction in concrete

A new diffusion-reaction model for the potentially deleterious Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) process in concrete is presented. The model involves three coupled diffusion processes, two in-goingand one out-goingfrom the aggregate viewpoint. Alkali (Na+ and K+) and Calcium (Ca2+) ions diffuse “inwards”, from high molar concentration sites in the pores of the cement paste phase of the concrete specimen or at its boundaries, towards the aggregate-cement paste interfaces or the inner cracks of the aggregates. The OH- ions associated with alkali and calcium ions attack certain forms of silica in the aggregates (the “reactive silica”), dissolving it in the form of silicate ions which in turn diffuse back to the cement paste phase (“outwards”). The final potentially deleterious ASR precipitation process involves those silicate ions, plus calcium and alkalis. It takes place wherever the reactants are available by precipitating silicate hydrates of two kinds (Calcium-Silicate-Hydrates –CSH or Calcium-Alkali-Silicate-Hydrates –CASH) in a proportion depending on concentrations and temperature. The diffusion-reaction equations of this process are discretized in space and time using finite differences. An example of application in 1D is presented to illustrate the capabilities to reproduce realistically the ASR process, including some novel features not usually which are not considered in the available literature, such as the role of calcium in the development of the reaction and the inherent relationship between the reaction product composition and its swelling capacity

Zero-thickness interface model with chemical degradation by acid attack

    Get PDF
Carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in abandoned oil/gas reservoirs is considered a viable alternative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. An important element of the risk associated with long-term CO2 storage is the loss of integrity of the cement seals of the abandoned wells in the reservoir. Among others, one possible cause of loss of integrity is the degradation of the oil-well cement due to the acid attack of the carbonated brine in the reservoir. In previous studies, the authors have developed a diffusion-reaction model for simulating this degradation process. In order to study possible coupled Chemo-Mechanical (CM) mechanisms, this model will be coupled with an existing mechanical model. For this purpose, in this paper, an existing constitutive law for zero-thickness interface, based on the theory of elasto-plasticity with concepts of fracture mechanics, is modified to incorporate the effect of chemical degradation on the mechanical strength parameters. Preliminary results obtained with this new constitutive law are presented, in order to illustrate the main aspects of the proposed constitutive law, as well as a possible C-M degradation mechanism that should be considered in the long-term safety assessment of CO2 geological storage projects
